The Cannery, which was built by Del Monte in 1907 as the world's largest fruit-canning plant, was converted into a retail project in the middle of the century and now contains many shops and restaurants, including Jack's Cannery Bar and Oyster Pier. Vendors' stalls and sidewalk cafes occupy the courtyard amid a grove of century-old olive trees, and street performers are usually out in force, entertaining locals and tourists alike.
